Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) announced Wednesday that she will refer four Democratic mayors to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for potential criminal prosecution over their handling of the illegal migrant crisis. The mayors—Mike Johnston (Denver), Eric Adams (New York City), Michelle Wu (Boston), and Brandon Johnson (Chicago)—were called out for their continued sanctuary city policies that shield illegal migrants from deportation.
Luna made the announcement during a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, where the mayors testified about their cities’ sanctuary status and what measures they have taken to control illegal migration. These cities, either officially or unofficially, limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, preventing law enforcement from assisting in deportations.
“You all speak about a broken immigration system, and yet here you guys are aiding and abetting in that entire process,” Luna told the mayors. “I do not think you guys are bad people, but I think you are ideologically misled, which is why, unfortunately, based on your responses, I’m going to be criminally referring you to the Department of Justice for investigation.”
Luna cited violations of federal law that prohibit bringing in and harboring illegal migrants, making it clear that these policies undermine national security and strain American communities. She emphasized that her referral was not personal but driven by the harm these policies cause to American citizens.
“If you guys continue doing what you’re doing, you’re not going to help anyone,” Luna stated, doubling down on her position.
The criminal referral is a formal request to the DOJ to investigate potential legal violations but does not mandate an investigation. Luna confirmed she will submit the referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi immediately following the hearing.
